The Liminal EMM Hierarchy

The Liminal EMM hierarchy is built from four essential types of units: an organization, sites, devices, and groups. These units work together to create a structure where settings and configurations set at higher levels cascade down to lower levels, removing the need to configure devices individually.

Organization

Your organization (or org) is the highest point of your hierarchy.

Settings and configurations set at this level cascade down the hierarchy to all of you sites and groups. This is where you create the essential configurations that every single device in your organization needs to have.

For example, this is where you would create your baseline compliance configurations that need to go out to every single device you manage, such as network security policies.

While you have an organization selected in the left navigation, you can access the following tabs with information and actions for that organization:

Nodes

Nodes are asset/product based groupings within your organization.

The Devices node contains anything related to physical locations and devices, including regions, sites, and device groups.

The Employee Directory node is currently in development.

The Bridge node is currently in development.

Regions

Regions represent physical locations that may contain more than one site. While you can create a region to represent any grouping you like, we often see people creating regions to represent regions of the US (New England, Midwest, etc.), states, or subsets of their business (pharmaceutical, tech, etc.).

Sites

Sites represent the literal warehouse sites that fall under your organization. They inherit any configurations created at the organization level and cascade any additional configurations down their immediate hierarchy to groups.

For example, you would set network access configurations at the site level. This ensures all devices at your site, but only devices at your site, can access your network.

Devices can only belong to a single site at a time.

For information on adding sites, see Adding a Site.

While you have a site selected in the left navigation, you can access the following tabs with information and actions for that site:

Groups

Groups are an optional level of your hierarchy. They fall between sites and devices, helping you group devices with similar functions for further single-point configuration. This is where you can create configurations that are only useful for a handful of devices.

For example, you could create a group that contains picking devices, one that contains receiving devices, and one for vehicle mounted devices. Now, you can send specific apps to those devices based on their functional requirements.

Devices can belong to any number of groups under a single site.

For information on creating groups, see Creating Device Groups.

Devices

Devices are the final point of the hierarchy. Devices are not directly configurable. Instead, they inherit all of their configurations from the organization and the site immediately above them in the hierarchy. If you have a few devices that require further configuration, groups can be used to create configurable subdivisions of devices within your site.

For information on enrolling devices, see Enrolling a Device.
